For islands across the world, access to freshwater has always been one of the biggest challenges for population growth, agriculture, and sustainable development.
Northern Cyprus changed this reality through a unique engineering project — an underwater pipeline system delivering freshwater directly from Türkiye beneath the Mediterranean Sea. Officially known as the TRNC Water Supply Project, this infrastructure investment became a turning point for the island’s future.
The project was designed to transport freshwater from southern Türkiye to Northern Cyprus ( Geçitköy Dam ) through a specially engineered underwater pipeline crossing the Mediterranean Sea. Unlike traditional underwater pipelines placed directly on the seabed, this project introduced an innovative suspended pipeline system installed below sea level.
The pipeline is held at a controlled depth using advanced engineering technology — making it one of the first large-scale systems of its type worldwide.
The TRNC Water Supply Project was officially opened in 2015 and was engineered with an expected operational lifespan of approximately 50 years. Designed as a long-term freshwater solution for Northern Cyprus, the system continues to support the island’s:
• residential communities• agricultural development• tourism infrastructure• urban expansion• future growth capacity
Northern Cyprus benefits from having a dedicated cross-sea freshwater connection — creating an additional layer of security for future generations. For international buyers considering relocation or a second home, infrastructure is one of the most important factors behind a stable lifestyle environment.
It is not only about owning property by the Mediterranean Sea. It is about choosing a destination prepared for the future.
